Why We Left Our Factories In China

FORTUNE -- When Mark Krywko and his son, Jason, launched Sleek Audio, a small business making in-ear headphones for iPods and other audio devices from a Florida town near St. Petersburg, they asked several U.S. manufacturers for quotes on how much it would cost to make their product. It was, of course, oh so much cheaper in China, so they contracted with a factory in Guangdong province and launched their first product in 2007.

But last year, fed up with low quality, too much travel, communications problems, shipping delays, rising costs, and -- worst of all -- a ruined shipment of 10,000 sets of earphones that cost millions and nearly brought the company to its knees, the father-and-son team made a big business decision... READ MORE

Gregor Technology - Hurco Helps Firm Go Lean From the Beginning

John Gregorich founded Gregor Technology in 1985 and built the business by providing fast turn-around of small-lot quantities for his customers. He needed a machine that could be programmed on the shop floor because he didn't want the overhead or have the time that a CAD/CAM system can require. When he saw a Hurco control demonstration at a local machine tool show years ago, he bought his first Hurco, a 3HP knee mill. He was producing parts within two days... READ MORE

Manufacturers Sweat Out Fate Of Equipment Write-Offs

Over the past four or five years, Fitchburg's Rocheleau Tool & Die Co. Inc. has bought a new piece of equipment every year. The upgrades have improved the company's efficiency and helped it turn out more of the metal machine parts it makes.

But owner Steven Rocheleau said the upgrades wouldn't necessarily be financially justifiable if not for a set of federal tax breaks that reward capital investment. READ MORE

New Lampin Corp Turning/Milling Center Now Operational

Lampin Corporation is excited to announce the purchase of a new Ganesh Cyclone 32-CS 7 axis Turn/Mill center! This highly versatile piece of equipment is capable of turning components up to 36MM (1.417 in), and with 27 tools installed; it can produce many custom parts complete without the need for secondary operations to be performed on other machines. Most custom parts that Lampin manufactures for our customers need both turning and milling operations to produce the part. This usually meant moving partially completed components from our lathes to our milling centers. Moving parts through multiple machines increased cycle time and delivery time to our customers. With this new Ganesh Cyclone we can often produce a complete part on one machine reducing our turnaround time. Furthermore, the new Cyclone frees up milling capacity in our machining centers to produce larger, higher complexity milled components with longer cycle times. The increased maximum diameter of 36mm on the Cyclone 32- CS also means many parts can now be turned from bar stock rather than having to be chucked which also reduces cycle time for our customers.

Brooks Machinery August Newsletter

Given the largely unpleasant news from around the world such as debt-ceiling debates, stock-market volatility, and sovereign debt crises, it is our pleasure to bring you some positive news from within the manufacturing sector in this newsletter. Manufacturing continues to be one of the few bright spots on the economic front in recent months. Part of that success story is the recent trend towards “Re-Shoring” (manufacturing work and jobs returning to the U.S.) The significance of this movement cannot be understated, and therefore we are hosting an event entirely focused on this subject. We hope that you will join us at our facility on October 19, 2011 to learn more. Please look out for more information on Re-Shoring in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your support!

Committing to U.S. Manufacturing

The gap between U.S. and Chinese wages is narrowing rapidly,” according to the Boston Consulting Group, which speaks of a “manufacturing renaissance.” The respected business strategy firm forecasts a continuing shift back to stateside production – “reshoring” or “insourcing” – for some appliances and heavy equipment marketed domestically. It cites a new Caterpillar plant in Texas, with 500 workers.

Brooks Machinery to Host Reshoring Event October 19th, 2011

On October 19, 2011, Brooks Associates, Inc. will host an innovative workshop on a growing trend in the manufacturing industry; reshoring or bringing manufacturing back to the United States from abroad.

Harry Moser (founder of www.reshorenow.org) will be the keynote speaker on Reshoring Initiative—Bringing Manufacturing Back Home.

Reshoring (or backshoring) manufacturing has grown increasingly popular in the U.S. over the last few years due to multiple factors:

· Higher Wage Rates in developing countries

· Higher transportation costs

· High reject rates from offshore sources

Workshop participants will receive and learn how to use tools that the Reshoring Initiative has developed to help customers understand their Total Cost of Ownership. Take-aways include::

· Business Practices to differentiate your company from offshore competitors

· Suggestions for selling the benefits of reshoring

· Cases studies of successful reshoring efforts

· Strategies for identifying work and markets that are less vulnerable to Offshorin

We will offer morning and afternoon sessions. Please look for email invitation in coming weeks.

To register, please visit www.brooksmachinery-reshore.com.

Engineering Our Way Out of Offshoring

Traditional corporate and enterprise accounting systems do not generate total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) data for companies locating or sourcing overseas in search of the lowest labor cost," asserted Harry Moser, founder of the Reshoring Initiative and retired president of Agie Charmilles LLC.

When total cost of ownership is calculated, Moser said, most companies discover that they have saved closer to 10% -- rather than the 30% or 40% that they initially thought -- by offshoring.

Boston-Area Machine Shop Invests in New Toyoda Vertical Machining Center for New Technology/Capacity

When Marc Boisvert (owner of Arro Engineering in Beverly, MA) visited the IMTS show in Chicago in September 2010 looking for vertical machining centers, he had a focused list of builders to visit with some key criteria in mind:

· Heavy Duty/Linear Guide Machine

· Good Local Support Network

· Latest Control Technology

After careful consideration, Marc chose the Toyoda FV1050S. Arro had not invested in a new machining center in a number of years, and as business continued to increase, capacity became an issue. Arro specializes in components for packaging machinery and has dozens of large-capacity CNC turning centers for shaft work. Machining centers are critical for secondary machining operations like key-way slots, cross holes, etc.

“The Toyoda FV1050 has really improved through-put since it came online”, says Marc. Marc relates that “Secondary machining had become a bit of a bottle-neck, especially during a surge in orders. The Toyoda has been highly reliable and accurate. Work flow has been much more consistent since we added this machine. If our growth continues, we will consider another unit in 2012.”

In addition to investing in world-class equipment, Arro recognizes the need for diversification. In addition to their job shop business, they design and manufacture a line of quick-change tooling for vertical milling machines (trade name is Mach 1 Tool). This ingenious design reduces R8 style manual tool changes dramatically. What used to take up to a minute, now takes only seconds. That time savings accumulates quickly and translates into hundreds of dollars per month. The payback on this tooling system is usually well within a year! This tooling is marketed globally at www.mach-1tooling.com.

A great success story. Arro Engineering was founded in 1978 by Marc’s father, Louis Boisvert. Since then it has grown to fifteen employees with over twenty CNC units for turning, milling, grinding. Marc’s son Dan has also joined the business, and Arro is well-poised for third generation ownership/operation (a rare feat, indeed, these days!) No stranger to the needs of a closely held company and family business, Brooks’ Peter Klier maintains Arro’s account, ensuring their continued success and satisfaction with the FV1050.

Hurco UltiMotion

What would a 30% reduction in cycle time mean to your shop?

More margin per part? More machine capacity? The specific benefits will vary for each shop, but it's easy to see how UltiMotion will pay for itself faster than any other control technology available.

  • Improve Surface Finish - UltiMotion reduces machine jerk during direction changes by 50%, resulting in smoother motion. That means less chatter marks, less vibration, better surface finish. Read more

  • Reduce Cycle Time - Cornering velocity with UltiMotion is 2.5x faster than conventional motion. Combine this with Hurco’s advanced motion planning and you get faster cycle times that further improve with the complexity of your part geometry. Read more

  • Faster Drilling/Quality Tapping - UltiMotion significantly reduces cycle time when you have repetitive tasks, such as drilling or tapping by taking the shortest path from hole to hole. No need to worry about good taps either, as UltiMotion always provides perfect machine synchronization. Read more

  • Extend Machine Life - The smoother the ride, the less stress placed on the entire machine and its components. Reduced machine jerk also maintains the accuracy of your machine longer. Read more

Sodick introduces new affordable-cost AD Series CNC Sinker EDM

Sodick's new and affordable-cost AD25L and the AD30L CNC sinker EDMs use a high speed linear motor Z axis drive which creates its own flushing condition. This eliminates the need (and labor cost) to machine flush holes into to the electrode and the experience required to set up auxiliary flushing lines.

The AD Series include a user-friendly, menu driven control that prompts the operator to input the required machining data. Once the data is entered, the control automatically writes the NC code.

The control also eliminates DC arcing and the zero electrode wear circuit dramatically reduces electrode wear and in many cases eliminates the need for semi and finishing electrodes.
